BigPond Billing Scam Email

Another good email scam, this one purporting to be from BigPond:

Dear Customer,

This e-mail has been sent to you by BigPond to inform you that we were unable to process your most recent payment of bill. This might be due to either of the following reasons:

1. A recent change in your personal information. (eg: billing address, phone)
2. Submitting incorrect information during bill payment process.

Due to this, to ensure that your service is not interrupted, we request you to confirm and update your billing information today by clicking here [note the link: http://tusdrei.de/futtern/telstra.com.au/members/myaccount/LANGUAGE/ECareServ/ID12549JDk23/Online%20Billing.htm].

If you have already confirmed your billing information then please disregard this message as we are processing the changes you have made.

Regards,
BigPond
Billing Department

It looks like the link has already been removed (and it is also flagged by Firefox automatically as a scam site), but I couldn’t find a lot of reference to this email with a Google so I figured this might help other people: it’s definitely a scam/phishing attempt.

  1. Yep, got this one today as well (twice), almost fell for it the first time but hovered my pointer over the hyper to check it. Reason I was almsot fooled was because my wife paid the bill via EFT the other day for the first time so I presumed she must have incorrectly keyed the details…close one.
    Thanks for posting this.

  2. Today I received the same e-mail with a different link.

They use several different web sites for this scam. Always watch out for the actual domain name it points to! Mozilla Firefox immediately recognizes the page and stops you with the following message:

“This web site at atlantickayaker.com has been reported as a web forgery and has been blocked based on your security preferences.”

  3. I’ve received the same e-mail twice and have noticed the the hyper link leads to an odd web address. Of course, I always stay on top of and keep track of all my expenses so I knew this e-mail was a scam of some kind when I read it, even considering when you try to do a search for BigPond Billing Department and cannot come up with anything concrete.

  4. I received this email recently. I thought it suspicious as I pay always by cheque.
    The address seems to be
    ebilling@bt.com

  6. This same e-mail is now going around pretending to be PayPal. It’s funny how the company name changes, but the e-mail address and body of the e-mail never change.
